A dramatic late strike from Altymyrat Annadurdyyew shattered Cambodian hearts and crowned FC Arkadag as the 2024/25 AFC Challenge League champions, with the Turkmen side edging Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng 2-1 after extra-time in a pulsating final at a packed Morodok Techo National Stadium.

It was a rollercoaster of a final that swung wildly in the closing stages. Mekan Saparow had nodded Arkadag ahead just before the hour mark, only for Saret Krya to restore hope for the hosts with a powerful late header that forced the match beyond 90 minutes. But with penalties looming, Annadurdyyew latched onto a perfect through ball from deep, kept his composure, and calmly slotted past Vireak Dara to seal a historic win.

The opening half belonged largely to Svay Rieng, who dominated possession and chances. Japanese midfielder Ryo Fujio and Brazilian forward Cristian both threatened early, but wasteful finishing and resolute defending kept the score level.

It took Arkadag until the 30th minute to muster a shot of note, but they grew into the game after the break. Shanazar Tirkishov’s set-piece proved pivotal as he assisted Saparow’s opener with a pinpoint corner.

Even after conceding late, Arkadag kept their nerve in extra-time. Min Ratanak hit the post for the Cambodians, and Pablo was denied by a brilliant save from Guychmyrat Annagulyyev before Annadurdyyew’s winner flipped the script.

Arkadag’s triumph marks Turkmenistan’s third continental club success and their first since HTTU Asgabat’s 2014 AFC President’s Cup win — a proud night for head coach Ahmet Allaberdiyev’s men and a cruel twist for the home favourites.
