Dortmund Hijack? Borussia Dortmund Enter Race for Japan Star Ritsu Doan Amid Frankfurt Talks
Just when Eintracht Frankfurt seemed poised to land Japanese dynamo Ritsu Doan, Borussia Dortmund have stormed into the picture — and they’re serious. Are we heading for a Bundesliga bidding war?
Borussia Dortmund have joined the pursuit of SC Freiburg’s versatile attacker Ritsu Doan, according to Sky Sport Germany reporters Patrick Berger, Florian Plettenberg and Dennis Bayer. The 26-year-old, who remains under contract with Freiburg until 2027, is now expected to leave the club this summer, with both Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt positioning themselves for a potential move.
Frankfurt had long appeared to be the front-runners. After failing to secure Doan’s signature during the January window, the Eagles had advanced talks with the player’s camp and are planning to reopen negotiations following the Bundesliga’s final matchday.
But now, in a surprise twist, Dortmund have entered the fray. Sky reports that initial discussions have already taken place between BVB and the player's representatives. The club views Doan’s profile as highly appealing, particularly given his technical skill, speed, and footballing intelligence — attributes that could fit seamlessly into head coach Niko Kovac’s new five-at-the-back system.
Left-footed and capable of operating centrally or on either flank, Doan has been under observation by Dortmund for some time. However, the club’s final decision will depend on a number of factors — including budget constraints and whether BVB qualify for next season’s Champions League. Ironically, that European spot could be determined by this weekend’s clash between Freiburg and Frankfurt, with all three clubs involved in a tense final-day battle.
There is no release clause in Doan’s contract, and Freiburg reportedly value him as one of their most impactful signings in recent years. Signed from PSV Eindhoven in 2022, Doan’s asking price is expected to be upwards of €20 million.
Whether Dortmund can outbid Frankfurt remains to be seen. But their sudden involvement is clear proof that the Black and Yellows remain intent on strengthening from within the Bundesliga. In recent windows, BVB have poached the likes of Waldemar Anton, Serhou Guirassy, and Maximilian Beier — adding to a growing list that already includes Niclas Füllkrug, Niklas Süle and Marcel Sabitzer.
With the summer window heating up, it looks like we could be in for another classic Bundesliga tug-of-war — and Ritsu Doan may be at the centre of it.
