EXCLUSIVE: JEONG SANG-BIN’S PROPOSED MOVE TO MALMÖ FALLS THROUGH — MLS TRANSFER NOW LIKELY

Minnesota United forward Jeong Sang-bin will not be returning to Europe this summer, with a proposed transfer to Swedish giants Malmö FF now officially off the table.

According to sources contacted by Football-Asian.com, Malmö had presented a competitive transfer fee to Minnesota and held detailed talks over personal terms with Jeong. However, negotiations ultimately broke down without an agreement being reached.

One major stumbling block was the salary package offered to Jeong, which was deemed insufficient. Additionally, Minnesota did not view Malmö’s proposal as compelling enough to justify parting ways with the player. This combination of factors stalled any further progress.

Green Card Changes the Equation

Jeong’s recent acquisition of a U.S. Green Card has also shifted the dynamics significantly. No longer occupying an international roster slot in Major League Soccer, he now represents a more valuable asset within the MLS market. Should Minnesota opt to sell him domestically, they could command a higher transfer fee than what Malmö were willing to pay — a key reason the Scandinavian move collapsed.

It should be noted that the Green Card does not guarantee permanent residency in the U.S., so Jeong’s decision to remain in Minnesota is not solely based on immigration status. Sources indicate the player is highly likely to leave Minnesota before the end of the year, with multiple MLS clubs having already expressed concrete interest.

Change in Role Spurs Desire for New Challenge

Jeong enjoyed a productive 2024 campaign in MLS, but has seen his role change in 2025 due to Minnesota’s tactical shift towards a more defensive, counter-attacking setup. He has primarily been deployed as an impact substitute in the second half of matches, and both the player and club are reportedly open to a move should the right offer arrive.

K League Sides Fall Short

Several K League 1 clubs also made approaches for Jeong this summer, but failed to meet Minnesota’s valuation of over $2 million. As a result, no formal negotiations ever began between the parties.

For now, Jeong is expected to continue his career in the United States.

Eyes on International Stage

His long-term ambition remains to represent South Korea in international competitions such as the Asian Games and the Olympics, which would help secure exemptions that facilitate playing abroad.

Jeong is eligible to be selected as an overage player for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya-Aichi, where a gold medal would be pivotal for extending his overseas career. However, competition is fierce among attackers in the U23 pool, many of whom are also targeting a medal to sustain their European ambitions.

Jeong’s final opportunity on the international stage could come at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Should he still be plying his trade in the U.S. by then, his familiarity with the environment may prove to be an advantage.
