Legia’s managerial shake-up reshapes transfer strategy

Legia Warsaw have initiated a fresh transfer drive following a major change in leadership. The club announced on 25 May 2025 that manager Gonçalo Feio will depart at the end of June, after failing to agree a contract extension despite winning the Polish Cup and reaching the UEFA Europa Conference League quarter-finals in 2024–25. Feio had replaced Kosta Runjaić in April 2024 and guided the team through a turbulent but ultimately trophy‑winning season. His exit leaves new head coach Edward Iordănescu, appointed in June 2025, with a key summer rebuild ahead.

Legia enter race for Celtic’s Yang

In this context of strategic restructuring, Legia have lodged an enquiry for Celtic winger Yang Hyun‑jun, as reported by Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph. The Polish club see him as a candidate to bolster their attacking options — a priority under the club’s new direction.

At Celtic, Yang featured 34 times across all competitions, contributing six goals and six assists. Despite flashes of high-quality play, he struggled to become a regular starter under Brendan Rodgers, particularly behind competition from Nicolas Kühn, Jota, and Daizen Maeda.

Legia’s needs after underwhelming league finish

Legia concluded the 2024–25 Ekstraklasa season in fifth place—a notable disappointment for a club with championship expectations. They recorded strong cup results, winning the Polish Cup 4–3 and impressively reaching the Conference League quarter-finals before elimination by Chelsea. However, inconsistency in league play highlighted both tactical and personnel issues.

New coach Iordănescu and newly appointed sporting director Michał Żewłakow are overseeing a transition, including departures in scouting and senior staff as part of revamping the club structure.

Why Yang fits Legia’s profile

At 23, Yang brings movement, attacking flair, and versatility across wide positions—qualities Legia desire as they seek European resurgence. He offers directness favored in Polish football and would provide depth and creativity to their forward line.

Legia appear to have joined a growing list of clubs monitoring Yang. Celtic might consider a sale only if match-winners are secured to strengthen the final third. Their pursuit of Benjamin Nygren reflects this approach, while potential departures like that of Nicolas Kühn are already in motion.
