Saudi giants Al Hilal have submitted a blockbuster £100 million bid for Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, offering the Portuguese star a staggering £700,000-a-week salary in a bid to lure him to the Middle East this summer. According to The Sun, the Riyadh-based club wants a final decision from Fernandes by the end of the month as they eye a marquee signing ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
United, still reeling from their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, are facing serious financial pressure after failing to qualify for European competition next season. In light of this, the club is now reportedly open to listening to offers for any player on the squad—including their talismanic midfielder.
Fernandes himself stoked speculation with a striking admission following the final in Bilbao:
“If the club wants to sell me, I will leave without any problem,” he said.
“I will never be a problem for the club.”
That comment has prompted Al Hilal to step up their pursuit, aiming to conclude talks swiftly. Club sources told The Sun that the Saudi Pro League champions want clarity on the deal within days, not weeks.
While United would ideally like to keep their standout performer—undoubtedly the club’s best player over the course of a turbulent season—they are confronting hard financial realities. The absence of European football means a major hit to revenue, and player sales are seen as a necessary route to remain compliant with profit and sustainability rules.
Other high-profile names are also reportedly on the chopping block. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony are all being circulated in the transfer market, while Alejandro Garnacho is said to be seeking urgent talks with the club after a frustrating end to the season.
Garnacho, who had started 14 straight matches from March, was dropped for the final two games of the Europa League campaign and benched for the final against Spurs—only being brought on with 19 minutes to play. The 20-year-old’s social media activity hinted at dissatisfaction, and Chelsea and Napoli, both of whom showed interest in January, are expected to return with new offers this summer. With his homegrown status, Garnacho’s potential sale could be particularly valuable from a financial standpoint.
The upheaval isn’t limited to the pitch. On Friday, Manchester United also confirmed that redundancies among football staff—part of the 150 to 200 job cuts announced earlier this year—are now underway. The decision was delayed until the season's end to avoid disrupting manager Ruben Amorim’s plans, but has now been implemented following the failure to secure European qualification.
With the club entering a summer of difficult decisions, Fernandes’ future is the first major domino that could fall—triggering a wider squad overhaul as Manchester United brace for one of the most transformative transfer windows in recent history.
