South Korea’s Lee Kang-in has called on fans to show more support and reduce harsh criticism towards head coach Hong Myung-bo and the Korea Football Association (KFA) as the national team looks ahead to the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking after a 4-0 victory over Kuwait at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, Lee, who was named Player of the Match, expressed concerns that excessive negativity could impact the squad’s morale. “We’re all part of the national team setup. The coach is our boss. Too much criticism affects the players, too,” he said. “I hope people can look at the positive aspects. That’s how we can do better at the World Cup.”

Lee acknowledged that constructive criticism is a natural part of the game but warned that over-the-top negativity risks undermining the team’s efforts. “We play to make the fans happy. Of course, criticism is part of football, but too much of it doesn’t help,” he added. “We need the fans’ support to bring joy to the nation and to maintain a healthy environment for the players.”

Lee also noted that the match attendance appeared lower than usual, attributing it in part to recent negativity surrounding the national team. “This might have been the smallest crowd since I was first called up. If interest keeps declining, it’s not good for us,” he said. “We want to bring joy to our fans, and we need their support to do that. We’re committed to giving our best every time we wear the national shirt.”

With one year remaining until the 2026 World Cup, Lee reiterated his commitment to working hard for both club and country. “Next year is huge for us. I want to be in the best shape possible to make everyone proud,” he concluded.
