Following a loan spell with Hibernian, Celtic are preparing to allow defensive midfielder Kwon Hyeok‑kyu to leave on a permanent transfer this summer. Having spent last season with Hibs, Celtic appear ready to cut ties — with Austrian Bundesliga side Austria Wien among several European clubs showing interest.

Scottish adventures: from St Mirren to Hibs

Since joining Celtic in July 2023 on a five‑year contract, Kwon has never featured in a competitive first‑team match. Instead, Brendan Rodgers sent him out on loan – first to St Mirren (eight league appearances in early 2024) before a longer spell at Hibernian, where he made 21 league appearances in the 2024–25 Premiership campaign.

While the Hoops had a strong desire to sell, negotiations are expected to proceed smoothly given his lack of impact at Parkhead .

International recognition — but still waiting for full debut

Kwon earned his first senior South Korea call‑up in September 2024 after impressing with Hibs. However, he remains uncapped at full‑international level, having been an unused squad member. He previously featured through the ranks — U14, U17, U20 and U23 — accumulating around 10 U23 caps and roughly 25 youth appearances with five goals .

Physique, passing and the ‘Rodri’ comparison

Standing at 1.92 m, the Busan‑born midfielder has garnered the nickname “K‑League’s Rodri” for his combination of size, deep‑lying play and passing range . Comfortable in defence, his athleticism, ball‑handling and tactical intelligence were praised during his loan at St Mirren and later at Hibs.

Sofascore rated him around 6.7–6.8 through the season, and he maintained consistent minutes in midfield — featuring over 21 times for Hibernian and averaging strong passing statistics .

2025 outlook: Austria Wien move on the horizon?

Sources say Austria Wien were tracking Kwon even during the summer of 2024 and are expected to renew interest now that Celtic are ready to sell. Should the move materialise, he would join compatriot Lee Kang‑hee from Gyeongnam FC, and compete as the club builds its midfield.

2025: a decisive crossroads

At 24 and with valuable Scottish top‑flight experience under his belt, Kwon stands at a career juncture. If he secures a permanent move — possibly with Austria Wien — he can establish himself in Europe and perhaps earn his first full cap for South Korea.

However, if his move stalls, another loan or contract renegotiation with Celtic seems likely — prolonging a relationship that has yet to produce a first‑team breakthrough.

Kwon’s move this summer could define his European future. A permanent switch — especially to Austria Wien — would give him a platform to showcase his talents on a bigger stage. For Celtic, it’s time to realise value and move on; for Kwon, it’s about finally converting potential into consistent top‑flight performance.
