TSG Hoffenheim are on the verge of completing the signing of Japan international Koki Machida from Belgian champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, according to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The deal is said to be worth €4.5 million, with the 27-year-old centre-back expected to undergo his medical in the coming days. Once completed, he will become Hoffenheim’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Bernardo, Tim Lemperle and Leon Avdullahu.

Machida has built a strong reputation as a composed, left-footed central defender, known for his positional awareness, sharp anticipation, and reliable distribution from the back. He featured in 25 league matches last season as Union Saint-Gilloise secured their first Belgian league title in 90 years, with Machida playing a pivotal role in their historic campaign.

His performances have not gone unnoticed in Europe, and Hoffenheim see him as a key figure in their ongoing squad rebuild. Sporting director Andreas Schicker is actively reshaping the side ahead of the 2024–25 Bundesliga season, with Machida viewed as a natural fit to bolster the defensive line.

The move to Germany represents a significant step in Machida’s career, both in terms of club football and his standing within the Japan national team setup. With a growing number of Japanese internationals succeeding in the Bundesliga, Machida will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of compatriots such as Wataru Endo and Hiroki Ito in establishing himself at the top level of German football.

Should all go as expected, Hoffenheim will make the deal official following the successful completion of his medical tests. The club are hoping Machida’s arrival can add steel and structure to a backline that has required reinforcements for some time.
