Pisa SC are considering a move for South Korean international Hwang Jae-won, according to a report from Italian outlet Sesta Porta. The 22-year-old right-back, who currently plays for Daegu FC in the K League, has been offered to the Serie A side and is now under close evaluation by the club’s hierarchy.
The Tuscans, recently promoted to Italy’s top flight, are said to be exploring new international profiles to strengthen their options on the right flank. Hwang, who is part of South Korea’s senior national team setup, is seen as a player with significant upside both on and off the pitch.
No formal negotiations have been reported yet, but sources suggest the deal remains open and viable. Hwang is far from an unknown quantity. He has already represented his country at senior level and was part of the South Korean squad that won gold at the 2022 Asian Games—a triumph that earned him exemption from the country’s mandatory military service. However, like Son Heung-min and Kim Min-jae before him, Hwang is currently completing a three-week basic training programme, which remains compulsory even for exempted athletes.
A dynamic and physically imposing full-back, Hwang is capable of playing as a traditional right-back or as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation. In fact, he spent much of the last season operating as a right-sided midfielder, showcasing his versatility and attacking instincts.
Pisa's interest in Hwang also reflects a broader strategy to tap into emerging football markets, where talent acquisition can bring not only on-pitch benefits but also commercial opportunities. The club is reportedly looking at successful precedents such as Eibar’s acquisition of Takashi Inui, which helped boost the club’s visibility in Asia.
While the move remains in the exploratory phase, bringing a well-established Asian talent into Serie A could offer Pisa both technical value and a new dimension off the pitch. The club continues to weigh the pros and cons as it prepares for the upcoming campaign.
