Bouanga Exit Looms, Triggering LAFC’s Bid for Son
As transfer talks between Denis Bouanga and Club América advance, LAFC have wasted no time in identifying his potential replacement: Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min.
With Bouanga potentially on his way to Liga MX, the Black and Gold have launched an ambitious move to bring the South Korean superstar to Major League Soccer immediately. The timing coincides with the opening of the MLS secondary transfer window on July 24, and sources close to the club confirm that LAFC are making a concerted push to complete the deal this summer.
Son, 33, is entering the final year of his contract with Spurs, and his name has long been linked to a future move to the United States. But with the departure of Bouanga now a real possibility, LAFC are accelerating those plans — and making the case for Son to join now.
Longstanding Interest, Now Intensified
Initial interest from MLS clubs, including LAFC, was first reported by Football-Asian.com in the summer of 2024. That interest escalated in February 2025, when both LA- and New York-based clubs were said to be in dialogue with Son’s camp.
By June, LAFC had already initiated direct contact via video calls during Son’s vacation in South Korea. According to sources, the meetings were described as “very positive” and laid the groundwork for a potential deal.
Commercial Clauses Complicate Early Exit
Despite the mutual interest, Tottenham face significant commercial roadblocks to greenlighting a move this summer. Spurs are scheduled to face Newcastle United in Seoul on August 3 as part of their Korea tour — a fixture reportedly tied to lucrative appearance fees that could be slashed by 75% if Son is not in the travelling squad.
Furthermore, existing sponsorship deals with South Korean partners allegedly contain clauses that would be invalidated by Son’s departure before the end of August. Without a substantial transfer fee to offset those losses, Spurs are unlikely to consider an offer.
Son Focused on One Last European Campaign
Son is also said to favour remaining at Tottenham for one final year, particularly after lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy last season. The club’s upcoming UEFA Super Cup clash and renewed Champions League campaign are seen as key motivations for him to stay.
The 33-year-old is expected to meet new head coach Thomas Frank before making a final decision, as the pair have yet to discuss Son’s role in the manager’s tactical plans.
MLS Move in January More Likely — But LAFC Not Waiting
Though sources suggest a January 2026 move is more realistic, LAFC are not waiting. The club are keen to act now, sensing a rare opportunity to secure a global icon while also preparing for the potential loss of Bouanga — the club’s top scorer in 2023 and 2024 and an MLS Best XI regular.
Bouanga has scored 13 goals and added seven assists in 20 league appearances this season. Mexican outlets including POSTA Deportes and TUDN have reported “advanced” talks with Club América, and the Gabon international did little to dispel rumours during a press conference this week, calling Liga MX a good fit for his playing style.
Two DP Slots Open, Commercial Windfall Expected
Currently fifth in the Western Conference, LAFC are firmly in the playoff picture and view Son as a marquee acquisition who can power a title run. With two Designated Player (DP) slots still available, the club is well-positioned to absorb both Son’s transfer fee and his wages — though the latter would reportedly be lower than offers from Saudi Arabia.
More importantly, LAFC believe Son’s arrival would unlock substantial new revenue through Asian broadcast rights, merchandise sales, and a deeper footprint in the Korean market.
Sources suggest the front office is ready to meet Tottenham’s financial demands, should Son agree to the move.
Olympic Dream and World Cup Context Add Long-Term Appeal
Sources say Son is also keeping long-term ambitions in mind. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place in the United States, and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Son is said to be eyeing a role as an overage player for Korea in the Olympic squad.
From a branding and narrative standpoint, LAFC would offer a perfect launchpad for this late chapter of his career.
Whether now or in January, the club’s intention is crystal clear: with Bouanga likely heading for the exit, LAFC are ready to hand Son Heung-min the keys to Los Angeles. All that remains is for the player to decide.
