Eintracht Frankfurt are reportedly leading the race to sign Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Japanese international Ko Itakura, with the 28-year-old centre-back set to leave the club this summer.
According to Rheinische Post, Itakura is expected to depart Gladbach ahead of the 2025/26 season, with Frankfurt currently emerging as the strongest suitor. The Europa League regulars, who secured Champions League qualification by finishing third in the Bundesliga, are eyeing defensive reinforcements amid growing speculation over the future of Brazilian defender Tuta, who featured 44 times across all competitions last season.
Itakura has one year remaining on his contract at Borussia-Park, and an extension appears unlikely at this stage. Gladbach are believed to be open to cashing in while they still can, with Sky Germany reporting that the player’s release clause is in the region of €10 million to €15 million – a reasonable figure given his consistency and experience.
The former Kawasaki Frontale defender joined Manchester City in 2019 before loan spells at Groningen and Schalke. He made a permanent move to Gladbach in the summer of 2022 for a reported fee of €5 million and has since become a mainstay at the heart of their defence.
During the 2024/25 season, Itakura made 33 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and registering one assist. Among his standout moments was a marauding solo run and finish against Borussia Dortmund, which showcased his confidence and composure on the ball.
His strong performances have sparked consistent interest from across Europe. PSV Eindhoven have been monitoring the player, while Dortmund have also been linked – particularly in light of Nico Schlotterbeck’s injury troubles. However, Frankfurt now appear to be in pole position.
Adding further intrigue is Frankfurt’s simultaneous pursuit of Freiburg midfielder Ritsu Doan. A reunion between Itakura and Doan – former teammates at Groningen – could materialise in Hesse, as the club continues to build around a growing Japanese contingent.
Itakura, capped regularly by the Japan national team, remains a highly regarded figure both domestically and abroad. A move to a Champions League club at this point in his career would represent a significant step up and an opportunity to compete at the highest level.
While no official agreement has yet been announced, the growing momentum behind the transfer suggests that Itakura could soon be pulling on a Frankfurt shirt – potentially alongside his compatriot – in what promises to be a busy summer for Die Adler.
