Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors have bolstered their midfield options with the signing of Portuguese defensive midfielder João Gamboa.

The 28-year-old joins the K League 1 side from Polish outfit Pogoń Szczecin, where he made 75 appearances over two seasons, contributing two goals and four assists. His arrival is expected to add greater solidity and energy to Jeonbuk’s midfield as the club continues to reshape its squad during the summer window.

Gamboa, who stands at 187cm, is known for his combative style, intelligent positioning, and high work rate. Primarily a holding midfielder, he is capable of operating across various roles in the centre of the park, bringing both versatility and experience.

A product of the academies at Benfica and Braga, Gamboa began his senior career with Braga B in 2015 before going on to represent several Portuguese clubs including SC Braga, CS Marítimo, GD Chaves, and Estoril Praia. His first move abroad came in 2022 with a transfer to OH Leuven in Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League, followed by a switch to Poland the following year.

Having represented Portugal at youth level from U16 through to U21, Gamboa arrives in South Korea eager to begin a new chapter in Asia. Speaking on his move, he said:

“I’m delighted to start my first Asian adventure with Jeonbuk Hyundai. I always put the team first and give everything on the pitch. I can’t wait to meet the fans and show my passion.”

Gamboa will wear the No.5 shirt and will be registered under the name ‘Gamboa’ in the K League.

The club believes his presence at the base of midfield will allow more freedom for their attacking players to push forward, with Gamboa providing both defensive cover and quick transitions from back to front.

His signing represents Jeonbuk's intent to reinforce their squad with experienced international talent as they seek to climb the league table in the second half of the season.
