Gus Poyet has made history in South Korea’s top flight, becoming the first foreign manager ever to win the K League’s Manager of the Month award in two consecutive months.
The Uruguayan tactician, currently in charge of K League 1 leaders Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, was officially named June’s ‘Flex Manager of the Month’ after guiding his side through the month unbeaten with three wins and one draw from four fixtures.
Jeonbuk kicked off June with a dominant 3-0 win over Gangwon FC in Round 18, followed by a thrilling 3-2 away victory against Suwon FC — a result that marked the club’s first four-game winning streak of the season. A 1-1 draw away to FC Seoul in Round 20 was the only blemish in an otherwise flawless month, capped off by a 2-1 triumph over Gimcheon Sangmu.
Their haul of 10 points in June was the highest of any club across K League 1 and 2 during the same period, strengthening their position at the top of the table.
This latest honour follows Poyet’s Manager of the Month win in May, when he oversaw a seven-match unbeaten run that included five wins and two draws. His consecutive awards mark a first for a non-Korean manager since the K League introduced the monthly accolade in 2014.
The last manager to win the award in successive months was Ko Jong-soo, who achieved the feat with Daejeon in August and September of 2018.
Poyet, who took charge of Jeonbuk ahead of the 2025 season, has revitalised the club with a dynamic, high-pressing style and strong squad cohesion. He will receive a custom-designed trophy and prize money presented by the Korea Professional Football League.
Jeonbuk now look to maintain their title charge heading into the second half of the campaign — with Poyet’s name already etched into K League history.
