Son Heung-min, who led the victory against Brentford, is receiving praise as a ‘true captain’.
In the 24th round of the 2024-2025 English Premier League (PL), Tottenham won 2-0 against Brentford. With this, Tottenham ended its four-game losing streak in the league and rose to 14th place.
Both of Tottenham’s goals came from Son Heung-min’s feet. In the 28th minute of the first half, Son Heung-min’s sharp corner kick headed toward the goal, but Brentford players got tangled up and lost the ball. Son Heung-min’s kick hit Vitali Zanelti’s body and went in, resulting in an own goal.
In the 42nd minute of the second half, Son Heung-min provided his 7th assist in the league. Son Heung-min passed the ball accurately to Pape Matar Sarr, who was penetrating into the half-space during a counterattack. Sarr, who received the ball, shot between the goalkeeper’s legs and scored. This is Son Heung-min's 7th assist of the season and his 69th assist in the PL. With this, Son Heung-min surpassed Darren Anderton and rose to 17th place in assists in the league.
Son Heung-min not only scored, but also contributed to the team with his dedication. He made three tackles that day and tried to block the opponent's attack. Son Heung-min actively ran to the opponent from behind and took the ball away. He was cautioned once while trying to block Brian Mbeumo's breakthrough in the 41st minute of the first half, but it was a foul to block a counterattack in advance because the defenders were unable to return.
British 'Football London' also acknowledged Son Heung-min's performance. The media gave Son a score of 8 points and said, "He showed the true form of a captain by chasing from behind and tackling. He also recorded a great assist for Sarr's goal." It was the highest score among the attackers.
The defense, which kept a clean sheet that day, received a high score. Archie Gray and Ben Davies, who worked together as centre-backs, received an 8-point rating, while Jed Spence, who blocked the left-back defense, received the highest rating with a 9.
